Which Vintage Concert Posters Are Historically important…and Valuable!

There are many factors that make vintage concert poster collecting compelling. One of the most important, is the fact that these posters were produced in very small quantities for advertising purposes. They were not mass produced in huge quantities for consumer consumption, like baseball cards or comic books.

Vintage concert posters represent an authentic link to what many consider the most historically important decade of the 20th Century. Here’ what Jann Wenner, founder of Rolling Stone Magazine says about the 1960’s:

“ The culture wars that began in The Sixties, about drugs, about military incursions, about sex and human rights, the environment, and on and on are still being fought. The issues are correct. They are rooted in the activism of The Sixties. The values have not only survived – in many ways they are the mainstream values of our times.

For this reason, it can easily be argued that all concert posters from the 1960’s and early 1970’s are important historical artifacts that are inherently more interesting and desirable than, for example, a Police concert poster from 1985.

That being said, many vintage concert posters from the 1960’s hold extraordinary historical importance that stands above the rest.

Some examples of this would be concert posters from famous concerts such as Woodstock or the Monterey Pop Festival. Concert posters for important historical events like Acid Tests, Trips Festivals, or The Human Be-In. Concert Posters for important moments in a bands career, like their first or last concert at a particular venue, or with a particular band member.

The bottom line is that if a concert poster was created for an event that for one reason or another “is not just another concert”, then that poster will be inherently more desirable to collectors and will have a commensurately higher value attached to it!
